How to Set Up Claude Cowork for Your Team
Claude Cowork lets your entire team collaborate with AI in one shared workspace. Here's how to set it up, what it's good for, and how to get the most out of it.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's team collaboration feature inside Claude. Instead of each person on your team having separate conversations with AI, Cowork gives you a shared space where multiple team members can work with Claude together — in real time.
Think of it like a group chat where Claude is a team member. Anyone can ask questions, add context, and build on each other's work. Claude sees the full conversation and understands what the team is trying to accomplish — not just what one person asked.
This matters because most business work is collaborative. A support lead might start a conversation about a tricky customer issue, a product person adds technical context, and Claude synthesizes both perspectives into a response. No forwarding threads. No re-explaining.
Step-by-step setup
Get a Claude Team or Enterprise plan
Cowork requires a Team plan ($30/user/month) or Enterprise. The free and Pro plans don't include it. Go to claude.ai/settings and upgrade.
Create your workspace
Once on a Team plan, create a workspace from the sidebar. Name it something your team will recognize — "Support," "Sales," or your company name.
Invite your team
Add team members by email. They'll get an invite to join your workspace. Each person gets their own login but shares the workspace context.
Set up Projects for different workflows
Create Projects inside your workspace for different functions — one for support, one for sales, one for ops. Each Project can have its own instructions and uploaded knowledge.
Upload team knowledge
Add your SOPs, product docs, FAQs, and internal guides to each Project. Claude will reference these when answering — so your team gets consistent, accurate responses.
Best practices
Start with one team
Don't roll out to everyone at once. Pick your most AI-curious team (usually support or ops), get them comfortable, then expand.
Write clear Project instructions
Tell Claude the team's role, tone, and common scenarios. "You help our support team respond to customer emails. Be friendly but concise. Always check the product docs before answering."
Use shared conversations for complex issues
When a support ticket needs input from product and engineering, start a Cowork thread. Everyone contributes context, Claude synthesizes.
Keep private work private
Not everything needs to be shared. Use personal conversations for drafts and brainstorming, Cowork for team decisions and collaborative work.
Review and iterate on Project instructions weekly
Your team will discover gaps in Claude's knowledge. Update the Project instructions and docs as you find them.
